The Legacy of Mettler Wines:
Mettler is a family-owned winery with a rich history rooted in the Lodi region. For over eight generations, the Mettler family has dedicated themselves to crafting wines that reflect their deep connection to the land. Their passion and commitment shine through in every bottle, offering wine enthusiasts an opportunity to savor the unique flavors of Lodi.
Mettler Albariño Lodi:
Let’s start our journey with the Mettler Albariño Lodi, a vibrant white wine that captures the essence of the Lodi microclimate. Albariño, traditionally grown in Spain, has found its perfect home in Lodi, where the warm days and cool nights allow the grapes to develop exceptional complexity and balance. This wine tantalizes the palate with refreshing notes of ripe peach, juicy melon, and zesty citrus. Its crisp acidity and lively minerality make it an ideal choice for summer sipping or pairing with seafood dishes. The Mettler Albariño Lodi is a testament to the winery’s ability to craft expressive wines that showcase the region’s potential.
About Albariño Grapes:
Albariño is a white grape variety that thrives in the coastal regions of northwestern Spain, particularly in the Rías Baixas appellation of Galicia. It is also gaining recognition in other parts of the world, including California’s Lodi region. Albariño grapes are known for their thick skins and high acidity, resulting in wines with vibrant flavors and refreshing crispness.
The history of Albariño dates back centuries in Spain, where it has been cultivated for generations. The grape is renowned for its ability to reflect the unique characteristics of its terroir. In Rías Baixas, the influence of the Atlantic Ocean brings cool temperatures and maritime breezes, lending the wines a distinctive saline character.
Albariño wines often display aromas of citrus fruits, such as lemon and grapefruit, as well as floral notes and hints of stone fruit. On the palate, they offer a combination of zesty acidity and a refreshing minerality. Albariño is a versatile wine that pairs well with a variety of dishes, particularly seafood and fresh salads.
In addition to Rías Baixas, the Lodi region in California has shown great potential for Albariño production. Lodi’s Mediterranean climate, with warm days and cool nights, allows the grapes to ripen slowly and develop their unique flavor profiles. The region’s sandy soils also contribute to the grape’s vibrant character.
Mettler Petite Sirah:
Next, we dive into the Mettler Petite Sirah, a bold and robust red wine that exemplifies the winery’s mastery of Lodi’s diverse terroir. Petite Sirah thrives in the region’s warm climate, resulting in wines with intense flavors and firm tannins. This vintage exhibits a deep purple hue and seduces the senses with aromas of blackberry, dark chocolate, and a hint of vanilla. On the palate, the wine unveils layers of black fruit, spice, and velvety tannins, leading to a long, satisfying finish. The Mettler Petite Sirah is a true testament to the winery’s ability to create wines with depth, structure, and exceptional aging potential.
Both Petite Sirah and Albariño are shining examples of how specific terroirs can shape the expression of grape varieties. Mettler wines beautifully capture the essence of these grapes, showcasing the best that Lodi has to offer.
Petite Sirah Grape:
The Petite Sirah grape is known for its bold and robust characteristics, making it a favorite among red wine enthusiasts. Despite its name, Petite Sirah is not a smaller version of Syrah. Instead, it is a distinct grape variety with its own unique qualities. Originally from France, Petite Sirah thrives in regions with warm climates and is particularly well-suited to the terroir of California.
With a dark and thick-skinned berry, Petite Sirah produces wines that are deeply colored and packed with intense flavors. The grape’s tannins are typically firm, giving the wine structure and longevity. The aromas and flavors of Petite Sirah often include dark fruits like blackberry and blueberry, along with notes of pepper, chocolate, and spice. It is a versatile grape that can be enjoyed on its own or paired with hearty dishes.
The best places to harvest Petite Sirah include the Lodi region in California, where the Mettler winery is located. Lodi’s warm climate and well-drained soils provide ideal growing conditions for the grape. Other notable regions for Petite Sirah production include Paso Robles, Sonoma County, and Napa Valley in California.
